MaryAnn Schouten, M.SLP, S-LP (c), reg. CASLPO

MaryAnn Schouten is a speech-language pathologist who has dedicated her 30-year career to supporting children in educational settings. She was part of the second graduating class of the Master of Speech-Language Pathology degree at the University of Alberta, in 1995.

She is currently the Manager of Communication, Language, and Speech Services and Deaf/Hard of Hearing Supports at the Upper Grand District School Board. Previously, she completed a term on the Board of Directors for the Ontario Association for Families of Children with Communication Disorders (OAFCCD) and is currently completing a term on the Executive Committee for the Association for the Collaboration of Speech Language Pathologists in Education (ACSLP).

Her work is defined by a passion for oral language and emergent literacy instruction. MaryAnn’s unwavering commitment to supporting children’s oral language and literacy skills led to the development of two innovative, evidence-based programs currently employed by clinical and educational staff at the UGDSB. The Language Intervention Through Engaging Stories (LITES) and Phonemes to Phonics programs each have an integrated assessment/progress monitoring tool. The Narrative Evaluation Tool (NET) and The Evaluation of Phonological Awareness and Phonics Skills (EPPS) were identified as reliable assessment tools through collaborative research with Western University and the Ontario Institute of Studies in Education, respectively.

MaryAnn engages her vocation with a servant leadership approach that inspires those around her. She and her team have advanced the profession of speech-language pathology by bridging research to practice and practice to research.
