Practicing Effectively in Relation to Interpersonal Violence (2024)

Presented By Colleen Varcoe, RN, PhD

With over 40% of women experiencing intimate partner violence and most of their children exposed to such violence, speech-language and audiology professionals need to understand interpersonal violence and be confident in their approaches. Our research has studied the dynamics and health impacts of violence and developed effective interventions, including a freely available app for women who have experienced or are experiencing violence. This presentation will review the dynamics of interpersonal violence against people of all genders and ages, with an emphasis on implications for practice. Please bring a phone or tablet with internet access or download the app.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify approaches to strengthen their practice, including their comfort level, in relation to interpersonal violence.
  • Become familiar with a range of tools designed to improve practice, including an opportunity to practice working with the app.

Intended Audience:

  • Pre-School (0-4)
  • School Aged (5-17)
  • Adult (18-64)
  • Seniors (65+)
