Fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallow (FEES) is one of two instrumental imaging procedures used for assessing dysphagia. It provides direct visualization of the larynx using a transnasal endoscope. FEES is often preferred over videofluoroscopy (VFSS) in terms of its portability, sensitivity in detecting evidence of micro-aspiration, and it is better suited for use with certain clinical populations. S-LPs working with dysphagia should be aware of when and how to use FEES in their practice and be prepared to undertake the required training to ensure they are able to provide this assessment to their patients. This webinar will focus on an introduction to FEES, its role in dysphagia assessment, and how S-LPs can get started with training.
Participants will be able to
- determine the need for instrumental assessment;
- choose between FEES vs. VFSS;
- understand the basic FEES procedure and interpretation of laryngeal image;
- identify indications and contraindications for FEES; and
- identify the process for training in FEES for S-LP.
