Home Forget the Flashcards – Building Intrinsic Targets into Therapy to Promote Generalization (2025)
Traditional articulation therapy focuses on following a hierarchy. But we know that speech does not naturally occur single words alone. In this webinar we will explore ways to bring generalization into every session from the beginning to promote speech success in a natural way.
As clinicians we see our clients succeed in therapy at their respective speech level; syllables, words, carrier phrase, sentences…and then they return to the waiting room and do not use that target sound at all when speaking with their family!
By adding targets that are natural to activities and conversation, we can start to target generalization of goals earlier to assist carryover outside of the therapy session.
We will examine how evidence-based methods for speech sound production can be used to enhance therapy and promote generalization by embedding therapy target in the activities that are often used as the reinforcement. The real goal for therapy is to have success without the flash cards.
Implementing generalization from the beginning by selecting targets that are intrinsic to the activity and conversation will reduce dependency on clinician cuing and material-based targets. We will discuss ways to make therapy functional, fun and informed by the well-established foundation of traditional articulation therapy and evidence of principals of motor learning.
