Advocacy Resources

As the national association representing communication health professionals, Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) is committed to highlighting the professions and to raising the profile of communications health in Canada.

SAC is calling for urgent action to strengthen Canada’s communication health workforce and improve access to care in pursuit of communication, safety and care for every Canadian. This document provides a high level summary of the Federal Advocacy Priorities at SAC.

Seven out of 13 Canadian provinces/territories do not provide sufficient infant hearing health care. As a result, health inequities exist for more than one third of Canadian infants which impact their development and education. The 2024 National Report Card from the Canadian Infant Hearing Task Force (CIHTF) reveals that little has changed since its 2019 Report Card. Once again, Canada receives an overall grade of “Insufficient” when it comes to providing infant hearing health services through Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs. Canadian audiologists and researchers are urging decision-makers at all levels to prioritize infant hearing health care.

SAC’s 2025 Federal Election Toolkit empowered members to advocate for stronger communication health services during the federal election. It outlines the importance of political engagement in shaping healthcare policy and highlights SAC’s advocacy priorities.

In support of our ongoing advocacy with the federal government, SAC’s Vote Communication 2021 campaign aims to push communication issues to the forefront and highlight the importance of access to speech-language pathology and audiology services across Canada. At the heart of our Vote Communication 2021 campaign is an extensive social media presence and new resources to promote our three key campaign issues.

In January 2018, SAC released an official statement regarding the use of facilitated communication and rapid prompting method in clinical practice.

In June 2017, SAC released two new resource toolkits designed to inform health-care professionals, patients/clients and their loved ones about common communication and swallowing issues at the end of life. Communication health professionals are encouraged to use these resources in their practice and to share them with colleagues, patients/clients and their families.

In September 2006, CASLPA sought to advise the public of the dangers of noisy toys and
began developing an extensive campaign entitled “Noisy Toys.” CASLPA wanted to alert
parents and caregivers to the potential dangers of noisy toys to their child’s hearing in
anticipation of the upcoming holiday shopping season. This message was an essential step
in preventing harm to a child’s hearing which can lead to serious communication and
learning difficulties in the future. In addition to the warning, CASLPA wanted to raise
awareness of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists and to raise the profile of its
association.
The campaign has since developed into a government advocacy strategy wherein
CASLPA is committed to educating Members of Parliament (MPs) and Health Canada
officials that some toys have the potential to harm hearing. Damage caused by exposure
to noisy toys can lead to serious communication and learning difficulties.
